From a Small Start-up to a Technological Powerhouse
Sometimes great stories don’t begin with a bang, but with a desk, two phones, and a good idea. That was the case in 2001, when Robert Gausterer and Andreas Tragenreif—together with Ramesh Sharma—laid the foundation for what is now known far beyond Austria as NEXT SYSTEM.
While the world outside was reeling from the events of September 11, 2001, NEXT SYSTEM remained remarkably stable—or rather, determined. The young company was already in the black in its very first year. A feat that was less a matter of chance and more a reflection of a clear understanding of the market, technical expertise, and a healthy dose of entrepreneurial spirit.
The Early Years – Small, Fast, Focused
Starting in a 20-square-meter office in the Frequentis startup center in Vienna, NEXT SYSTEM quickly evolved from an ambitious newcomer into a serious partner for industrial clients.
The name NEXT SYSTEM was not chosen by chance. It is a logical consequence of the founders’ vision and mission: the development of future-oriented, customer-specific systems as well as the provision of consulting-intensive components. NEXT SYSTEM stands for the commitment not only to deliver technological solutions, but also to think ahead and develop them in a targeted manner together with its customers.
From the very beginning, three business areas formed a solid foundation: drive technology, display and touch solutions, and embedded computers. These three areas remain the company’s formula for success to this day because they combine the essential requirements of modern technology: they bring motion, innovative operation, and intelligence to devices.
Just a few years later, it became clear: the office was too small for big plans. Growth needs space. And sometimes new perspectives as well—NEXT SYSTEM relocated, restructured itself, and set the course early on for sustainable quality with ISO 9001 certification. As part of this development, co-founder Ramesh Sharma left the company in 2005, after which NEXT SYSTEM reorganized itself into a holding structure and further professionalized its organizational setup.
Growth with integrity—even through crises
The 2008/09 financial crisis put many companies to the test. NEXT SYSTEM did not respond with stagnation, but with adaptation. Costs were optimized, structures streamlined—and the focus remained on the future. The result: Emerging stronger from the crisis!
In 2010, a strategic move began that would have a lasting impact on the company: investment in its own research and development, particularly in the field of HAPTIC FORCE TOUCH technologies. What began as a vision quickly developed into a technological differentiator
With the opening of its new Technology Center in Vorchdorf in 2012 and its expansion into Germany, Hungary, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, and China, NEXTSYSTEM went global. Throughout it all, one thing remained constant: our commitment to our customers and our ability to translate complex requirements into marketable solutions.
When innovation suddenly resonates
2017 marked a major milestone. Winning the Embedded Award at the Embedded World Exhibition and Conference—as the first non-German company—for its haptic touch technology was not just an accolade, but a statement.
NEXT SYSTEM had evolved from an added-value distribution company into an innovative technology partner.
What followed was consistent implementation: first series projects, partnerships in the automotive and industrial sectors, and the further development of proprietary solutions. In short: the idea became an application, and innovation became business.
Between Boom and Reality – The Last Few Years
2020 brought what no one had asked for: a pandemic, uncertainty, and a standstill. Yet even here, NEXT SYSTEM’s strengths shone through: flexibility, collaborative partnerships, and a team that sticks together. For that is perhaps the company’s greatest factor for success—a work environment characterized by trust, development, and genuine collaboration.
The slump was followed by a boom in demand. Between 2020 and 2022, revenue doubled—accompanied by supply bottlenecks and, at times, absurd price trends in the component market. One could say: When everything becomes more expensive, experience becomes priceless.
The boom was followed by a market correction in 2024/25. No reason to panic—it’s simply part of a healthy cycle. Cautious growth is again on the horizon for 2026—with a clear strategic focus as a state-of-the-art system provider and further expansion of assembly capacities.
Rapid time-to-market, high availability, durable systems—these aren’t just buzzwords, but results.
Today and Tomorrow – NEXT SYSTEM Keeps Moving Forward
Today, with over 40 employees, NEXT SYSTEM stands for stable partnerships, technological expertise, and economically sound solutions. Yet despite all this growth, one thing has remained the same: the founders’ mindset.
> The determination to make things better through progress.
> The ability to recognize opportunities where others see limits.
> And the conviction that innovation can only be achieved together.
Put simply:
NEXT SYSTEM doesn’t just think about systems—NEXT SYSTEM builds them. For 25 years.
And the next ones are already in the works.
